Pfadt Race Engineering is taking its expertise in manufacturing well-engineered high performance suspension components and implementing it in a new breakthrough Tri-Y header design for C6 Corvettes! Immediately setting itself out from the pack, the headers feature what you have come to expect from Pfadt: motorsports design technology in a street-performance Corvette product. The Pfadt design takes proper exhaust flow to a new level by pairing non-adjacent cylinders together to create a super-scavenging effect with the 4-into-2-into-1 (Tri-Y) construction. In this system, the exhaust flow from individual cylinder pulses are optimized to suck air into the combustion chamber from the intake. This creates a much more efficient power curve that results in a greater amount of usable torque (called torque under the curve) in the mid-range, while not sacrificing any top-end power for peak numbers. As you would expect, the beginning of a great header begins with a lot of hard work! We began our journey with a lot of number crunching. There are two main ways that a properly designed set of headers will make more power:

    Removing Restrictions -By reducing pumping losses you can increase the overall velocity of the exhaust gas coming out of the cylinders and make more power! We settled on a final tube diameter of 1.75 primaries and huge 2" secondaries which flow into one final 3" collector. This gradual step up in tube diameter ensures you will have great flow up to power levels of 850+whp. The Tri-Y design is a whole-different animal than a traditional 4-into-1. The unique aspect being that the combination of 1.75"/2" tubes supports horsepower levels at and above the range of a standard 1.875" 4-into-1 design.
    Pressure Pulse Tuning-Each time a volume of exhaust gas flows out of the head and into a collector, whether it be a Tri-Y or a 4-1 header design, when it comes in contact with a change in cross sectional area like a collector there is a negative pressure pulse sent back up the tube and back into the head at the speed of sound. This negative pressure pulse when tuned correctly can help improve scavenging by sucking fresh air into the cylinder. To take full advantage of this effect the lengths of the tubes must be designed to the proper length. One of the big reasons why a Tri-Y setup offers superior low end performance is because the 3 collectors in a Tri-Y let us optimize scavenging at both high and low RPM, rather than just one RPM range like in a typical 4-1 header.

Mid-Pipes with or without Catalytic Converters The mid-pipe will house your cats should you choose to run them. The cats being offered use a high flow Metal Matrix design, are extremely high quality and made in the USA, so you can be sure they will last you quite a long time. Typically you can expect more HP with a cat-less setup, but the cats are great for reducing some exhaust emissions, cutting down on both the strong fuel smell from a true performance tune and also slightly muffling the sound of an aggressive exhaust. For the vast majority of applications the catalytic converters are the only option. All of our Pfadt Tri-Y header products are intended for off-road use only, but for those looking for that last extra bit of HP a non-catted mid-pipe is available. The cats will be welded directly into the mid-pipe instead of welded and bolted to a flange, we chose to do this because it eliminates one more potential spot for leaks and misalignment. Our kits have the option of adding 2 or 4 Oxygen Sensor Extenders depending on if you have a mid-pipe with or without catalytic converters.

X-Crossover Design The crossover portion of the mid-pipe is important because it provides not only pressure and flow equalization between the left and right header banks, but also adds one more change in cross sectional area to help with scavenging. Just like the position of our Tri-Y collectors, the position of the X must be tuned to the proper length. We tried several different X pipe positions before settling on the final one. Our dyno tuning proved that where we positioned our X was making the most power over other positions with this particular header design. The differences weren't massive, but enough to prove that position 2 was the clear winner in midrange torque without much effect on top end power. Position 2 is the position we decided to run with!
